Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you work with different Log Homes package plans?

A: Absolutely! We can work with almost any plans; however, some may need to be modified for local codes. We can offer many standard plans as well as custom plans. We work with Southland Log Homes, Yellowstone Log Homes and with area architects, if the customer so chooses.

Q: How much does it cost per square foot to build a log home?

A: This is the most commonly asked question and perhaps the most difficult to answer. The “square foot figure” can change quite a bit based upon location, layout of your land, porches or decks, customer likes and dislikes and other design considerations all may impact the price. A ballpark range (and it’s a really big ballpark) is from $350 - $400 per square foot for a turn-key project. “Buster’s Log Homes”, turn-key projects take everything into account: site preparation, logs, log package and foundation up to finished flooring and exterior stain application.

Q: How long will it take to build my log home?

A: This can vary greatly based upon several factors including weather, location, who is building the home, etc. A realistic expectation for a complete turn-key build is about 6 to 9 months.

Q: How long will it take to dry-in my log home as opposed to a turn-key job?

A: A dry-in construction on average sized home usually takes 5 to 8 weeks. This depends upon several factors including weather, location and the layout of your land.

Q: How does the cost of a log home compare to a comparable stick built home?

A: I build log homes for about the same price as a good quality frame stick built homes in this area. There are many things that determine the final price of a home. Each home that I build is bid out individually. No two are exactly alike.

Q: How is a log home insulated?

A: The walls of a log home need no insulation. A log wall is a sold thermal mass which works better than conventional walls at keeping hot or cold air form escaping. Conventional types of insulation are used in the roof system, interior walls, and sub-floors when needed.

Q: We have always dreamed of building a log home. How do we get started?

A: Buster’s Log Homes can be involved in the building process well before any construction begins. From selecting plans to helping you find the perfect piece of property. Our experience and local knowledge will expedite your entire construction project.

Q: Can we customize standard plans?

A: Yes. I do not think that I have ever built a house without at least a few minor changes to the plans. Doors and window locations, as well as interior walls are quite easily moved. We want the home to be what you want and need. Do not hesitate to make it your custom home.

Q: What services do you offer?

A: We are a full service construction company. Most of our log homes are turn-key finished homes, but we also construct dry-in shells if the customer so desires. We build to suit, so I just need to know what involvement in the project you want from me. We build log homes and sell a full range of log home products, including log home packages, logs, log posts, etc. We also involved in log home restoration work, including cleaning, restaining, sealing and chinking. We also build conventional framed homes.

Q: Can we buy a log package or just buy logs from you?

A: Yes, you can buy a log package or just buy logs without us doing the construction process.

Q: Why a log home vs. a conventional home?

A: Aside from their obviously different appearance, log homes are much stronger and more durable than their conventional counterparts. From a “livability” standpoint, log home owners routinely talk about how the logs “wrap around you”. Most hate to leave their homes and can’t wait to come home again. Still others say living in a log home is “like being on vacation.” Need another reason? You don’t see subdivisions full of them.

Q: Aren’t log homes hard to decorate?

A: In one way, they’re actually easier to decorate than a conventional house. The design of a log home’s interior, with its dramatic volume ceilings, exposed beams and the logs themselves are a strong architectural statement. In many modern homes, you have a “white box” of four plain walls. Consequently, you have to create or fake architectural interest. This interest is already there in a log home. The task is to accent it through color, and accessories. Often, the simpler the better.
